Mahindra Freedom\_NU: The Next Chapter of India's Most Ambitious SUV Maker
19 June 2026
Last Updated: June 2026 | This is a living document — we will track the Freedom\_NU story as it develops. What Is Freedom\_NU?
On India's 79th Independence Day — August 15, 2025 — Mahindra didn't just celebrate a national holiday. It unveiled its bold new vision for its SUV lineup starting 2027: Freedom_NU — featuring four futuristic concept vehicles, Vision.S, Vision.X, Vision.T, and Vision.SXT, all built on an all-new platform called NU_IQ.
This was not a product launch. It was a declaration. Mahindra was telling the world: the next generation of Indian SUVs is being designed here, engineered here, and built for the world.
The event was held in Mumbai and marked the beginning of what Mahindra is calling Global Vision 2027 — a new automotive chapter that goes beyond what any Indian carmaker has attempted before.
The NU_IQ Platform: What It Is
Mahindra's NU_IQ platform is a flexible, modular, monocoque architecture capable of supporting multiple powertrain options — ICE, Electric, and Hybrid — and can accommodate different body sizes and styles. All upcoming next-generation vehicles based on this platform will be SUVs.
Think of NU_IQ as the foundation beneath the ambition. Here's what makes it significant:
Multi-Energy Ready — The architecture is modular and supports multiple powertrain options including ICE, Electric, and Hybrid. Mahindra said its upcoming next-generation vehicles based on this platform will all be SUVs.
Size Range — The focus of the NU_IQ platform is on models from the mid-size segment, with sizes ranging from sub-4 metres to around 4.5 metres, and a wheelbase of 2,600 mm.
Interior Space — When the next-generation SUVs hit the market, they will provide up to 644 litres of boot space, along with 937 mm of legroom and 1,404 mm of shoulder room for second-row occupants.
Commanding Stance — Mahindra claims it will offer the best-in-class commanding seating position and 227 mm ground clearance.
Flat Floor Architecture — NU_IQ delivers India's first flat-floor ICE SUV — a feature typically reserved for EVs — giving rear passengers a dramatically more comfortable ride.
5-Link Rear Suspension — The new architecture has a 5-link rear suspension, typically found in luxury cars, which should help in providing good road manners.
Safety — The platform is capable of achieving a 5-star rating in Global NCAP and Euro NCAP.
Made in India — The NU_IQ platform is fully localised in India, while the concepts were developed collaboratively by Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai and Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE) in Banbury, UK.
How NU_IQ Is Different from INGLO
Mahindra already has a premium EV-only platform — INGLO — which underpins the XEV 9e and BE 6. So why NU_IQ?
While INGLO powers Mahindra's BEV lineup, NU_IQ is built for flexibility across ICE and EV. It targets white spaces in the SUV market globally and emphasises authentic SUV traits, modularity, and scalability.
In simple terms: INGLO is for the electric elite. NU_IQ is for everyone else — and for every powertrain.
The Vision Series: Four Concepts, Four Directions
Vision.S — Sporty Solidity
The Vision.S was probably the most anticipated of the lot. The production form will likely join the Scorpio family. On the design front, it has a very bulky, boxy shape with several dead-straight lines on the bodywork. The front fascia looks modern and carries the Twin-Peaks logo, vertically-set LED lights, and a headlamp cluster creating an interesting L-shape. The fog lamps have a pixel-like design.
Mahindra describes Vision.S as built for those who command attention without asking for it. Production expected: 2027.
Vision.T — Born Iconic
The Vision.T is an evolution of the Thar.E concept showcased in 2023. It looks very much like a Thar — with a squarish bonnet, bulky wheel arches, a two-part grille with six horizontal slats, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, and all-terrain tyres.
This is the next Thar. Designed for those who take the unbeaten path like it's the only one. Production model expected: 2027.
Vision.SXT — Iconic Versatility
The SXT concept is also underpinned by the NU_IQ platform and will spawn both EV and ICE versions. Also based on the 'Born Iconic' design language, it has a pickup-like design with a small cargo bay which accommodates two tyres.
Vision.SXT balances muscle and refinement — an SUV that doesn't adapt to the terrain, the terrain adapts to it.
Vision.X — Sculptural Athleticism
The Vision.X is the wildcard of the four — a coupe-SUV concept that blends a sporty silhouette with SUV proportions. Athletic, oozing speed even at a standstill, it is likely to become a new-generation XEV or XUV product in Mahindra's lineup.
Design Philosophy: Feeling Meets Force
All four concepts are built under Mahindra's HEARTCORE design philosophy, which the brand describes as the next phase of its visual identity — where emotional design meets muscular force. The tagline: Feeling Meets Force.
This philosophy connects the current lineup — Scorpio-N, Thar Roxx, XEV 9e — to the future Vision Series through a consistent visual language: strong shoulder lines, a commanding stance, the Twin-Peaks grille, and lighting signatures that are unmistakably Mahindra.
Production Timeline
